KINGSTON’S CONFEDERATION PLACE HOTEL

Going Green proves sound investment

March 10, 2007

KINGSTON, ONTARIO: An innovative solar hot water heating technology developed at Queen’s University with private industry has saved 36 tonnes of green house gas emissions for Kingston’s Confederation Place Hotel in the first year.

This almost doubles the expected savings of 20 tonnes.

The 100-room Confederation Place Hotel was the first commercial user in Eastern Canada to adopt this energy-saving technology. The system, includes 20 four-by-eight solar collectors mounted on the roof of the rear wing of the hotel.

The EnerWorks system, which uses cost-free solar energy as its power source, is being used to heat water for the hotel’s swimming pool, hot tub, bathrooms for the 94 bedrooms, and all of its kitchen water supply. Since becoming operational the system has generated hot water and savings on the Hotel’s utility bills amounting to over $10,000.00.

“We are pleased to have taken the lead in adopting this alternative energy technology particularly now that it has far exceeded our initial expectations,” said Bill Allinson, Managing Director, Confederation Place Hotel. “It was a big step but this experience means that we will be looking at integrating more green technologies at the hotel.”

The solar hot water heating system was developed jointly by EnerWorks and Dr. Stephen Harrison, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Queen’s University. Additional funding assistance for this system was made available through two levels of government support, the REDI program, a federally sponsored grant combined with an Ontario Government Sales Tax rebate for renewal energy initiatives.

Located on the waterfront in Kingston for over 30 years, Confederation Place Hotel and Conference Centre is a family owned and operated business, offering accommodation, conference facilities and restaurant services to local, regional and international clients.
